Book Week in the Middle School

We are very fortunate to have such a bubbly, enthusiastic and dynamic Middle School teacher librarian as Ms Palmer, and her library is always overflowing with boys who enjoy being there.  Reading and books are constantly celebrated in her library, and so far this year the boys have been treated to a number of author visits: firstly a group went down to the Somerset Literature Festival where they attended four different author sessions;  later, two popular authors, Derek Landy and Charlie Higson, visited our school to talk to the boys; and then, to celebrate Book Week this week, they have had the opportunity to meet two more authors and illustrators – Roland Harvey and Dave Hackett.

Each day this week, Ms Palmer organised activities around the theme “Put yourself in the picture”, and each day started with all Middle School classes enthusiastically joining in the class trivia competition.

On Monday, former architect and renowned children’s author and illustrator, Roland Harvey, showed the Year 6 and 7 boys his quirky illustrations and explained how to draw them easily using outlines and perspective, while Monday lunchtime saw many of the teachers bringing back fond memories as they read picture books to the boys. Tuesday lunchtime featured team trivia in the library, while Wednesday’s caricature artists in the Middle School amphitheatre were extremely popular. The boys were able to purchase tickets for a chance to have themselves drawn, and the lucky winners were illustrated by current Year 12 students and one of our Old Boys. All proceeds from this will go to the Pyjama Foundation which promotes reading for disadvantaged children.

On Thursday, a room in the Lilley Centre was buzzing with excitement as Year 6 and 7 students were able to play selected computer and board games, and Friday saw the culmination of an extremely successful week with a sell-out breakfast for 220 students and parents. The Centenary Hall was decorated with life-size cutouts of books and movie figures, as well as over 50 reading posters created by the boys. Cartoonist Dave Hackett entertained everyone with his amazing skills, and then he later showed the Year 8 boys how to draw caricatures. Friday’s final event was the Book Donation program, where boys were able to donate a book to the Library.

This was a fantastic week, and further reinforces the  wonderful culture of reading that we have here at the school.
