Miles Franklin Literary Award

The Miles Franklin Literary Award is Australia’s most prestigious and sought-after literary award for writers or playwrights portraying any aspect of Australian life. It was established in 1954 by a bequest from author Stella Maria Sarah Miles Franklin, and the income from her bequest is used to fund the award, now worth $42,000. The main objective of the award is for “the advancement, improvement and betterment of Australian Literature”, something that Miles Franklin was passionate about, and since its inception it has encouraged a richness and depth to the art of Australian writing.

The 50 books submitted this year were described by the judges as ‘compelling’ and ‘exhilarating’ and of these, six were shortlisted. Details about the shortlist can be found here.

Lovesong Alex Miller Allen & Unwin
The Bath Fugues Brian Castro Giramondo Publishing
Jasper Jones Craig Silvey Allen & Unwin
The Book of Emmett Deborah Forster Random House
Truth Peter Temple Text Publishing
Butterfly Sonya Hartnett Penguin Group (Australia)

The winner of the 2010 Miles Franklin Literary Award, was announced in June, with Peter Temple’s Truth taking the top prize.  Temple is known for writing morally sophisticated and literary crime fiction, while making comment about contemporary Australian life.  Truth, which is the sequel to The Broken Shore, is about a dedicated inspector, Villani, who finds the certainties of his life falling apart around him.  It is a great read, particularly for boys in Years 11 or 12.

Interestingly, two other shortlisted books, Jasper Jones (Craig Silvey) and Butterfly (Sonya Hartnett), are often marketed as young adult fiction.  Jasper Jones is being touted as an Australian To Kill a Mockingbird, similarly dealing with truth, justice and growing up.  Butterfly is about a girl of fourteen who struggles with the complexities of adolescence while becoming aware of the dark, adult world.  Both books would be suitable for boys in Year 10 or above.

All three books are available in the Senior Library.
